Frequently asked
Will switching suppliers interrupt my power?
No. Your existing utility (AEP, Duke, FirstEnergy, Enbridge, etc.) keeps delivering your electricity or gas the same way it always has — only the company that supplies the energy changes. You won't lose service for a single second during the transition.
How much can I really save?
It depends on your current rate, your usage, and which offers are live in your utility's service territory. Most Ohio households we see save between $80 and $400 per year on electricity, and $30 to $150 per year on natural gas. The savings number on your Results screen is a personalized estimate based on your bill.
What does EnergyMonkey cost?
Nothing to you. We're paid by the suppliers when you enroll with one through us — that's a normal Ohio energy-broker arrangement and it doesn't add anything to your bill.
Are these rates real?
Yes. We pull the offers directly from PUCO's Apples-to-Apples database (energychoice.ohio.gov), which is the official Ohio rate-comparison source. The list is refreshed regularly and we filter to fixed-rate plans by default to keep things predictable.
What's a Customer Number and why does FirstEnergy need one?
Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company, and Toledo Edison (all FirstEnergy utilities) print both an Account Number and a separate Customer Number on every bill. Most suppliers use the Customer Number to enroll you. When you scan a FirstEnergy bill we extract both — make sure the Customer Number is filled in before you enroll.
What's the difference between Mcf, Ccf, and therms?
All three are units of natural gas. 1 Mcf = 10 Ccf ≈ 10.37 therms. Different Ohio utilities bill in different units (Columbia Gas uses Ccf; Enbridge uses Mcf; some bill in therms). EnergyMonkey converts between them automatically when comparing rates so the savings math is correct.
Can I cancel a switch after I sign up?
Yes. After you enroll with a supplier, your utility will mail you a confirmation notice. You have seven (7) calendar days from the postmark date to rescind by calling the number on that notice. After that, you can cancel based on the supplier's contract terms — for fixed-rate plans there's usually an early termination fee.
Do I need to give you my password or banking info?
Never. We never ask for utility account passwords, bank account info, or your social security number. Sign-in to EnergyMonkey uses email or OAuth (Google/Apple/Facebook). The supplier you enroll with handles their own billing on the same monthly utility bill you already pay.
